Visual field testing is a key diagnostic tool for detecting peripheral vision loss and managing conditions like glaucoma and retinal disease. By mapping a patient’s full visual field, we can identify blind spots, track disease progression, and fine-tune treatment. While there are different methods of testing the visual field, the two primary ones are Static Automated Perimetry (SAP) and Kinetic Perimetry.

Kinetic Visual Field Testing vs. Static Perimetry

Most eye care providers, whether ODs or MDs, rely on Static Automated Perimetry (SAP), most commonly using the Humphrey Field Analyzer (HFA). This makes it easier for referring patients, as most doctors are familiar with the reports and can manage and evaluate progression in patients with diseases like glaucoma.

So why is kinetic visual field testing still is a vital method of assessing visual function?

Kinetic perimetry maps the visual field by moving a stimulus from the periphery inward until detected. This method is essential for evaluating peripheral vision in conditions like neuro-ophthalmic disorders and retinal degenerations.
